I've spent a lot of time exploring this area from a canoe, and for me that's one of the best ways to experience Llangollen. You get to see the valley from a completely different perspective, slow down and actually take in what's around you.

So, whether you're planning a family day out, a weekend in North Wales or simply wondering what there is to do around Llangollen, here are 10 ideas to put on your list.

1. Canoe across Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Let's start with the big one.

Canoeing across Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is one of the most unusual ways to experience Llangollen and the surrounding Dee Valley.

The aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal high above the River Dee, giving you incredible views across the valley as you paddle along the canal.

And yes, you're actually canoeing across the aqueduct.

For many people, the first few minutes are a mixture of excitement and wondering exactly why they've agreed to paddle a canoe so high above the river!

Once you settle into it, though, the experience becomes much more relaxed. There's time to enjoy the scenery, take photographs, look out for wildlife and hear some of the stories behind this remarkable part of North Wales.

You don't have to get in a canoe to experience Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Walking across the aqueduct is another fantastic way to appreciate the scale of this incredible structure.

The towpath gives you a completely different perspective from the water. Look down and you'll see the River Dee far below, while the surrounding countryside stretches out across the valley.

The aqueduct forms part of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site, which covers around 11 miles of canal, countryside, tunnels, viaducts and aqueducts.

If you're visiting Llangollen, it's well worth making time for.

And if you want to experience it from the water rather than simply walking across it, that's where a guided canoe trip can turn a sightseeing visit into an adventure.

3. Explore Llangollen Canal

The canal is one of the best ways to slow down and appreciate the scenery around Llangollen.

You can walk or cycle along sections of the towpath, take a canal boat trip or, if you're feeling adventurous, explore it by canoe.

The Llangollen Canal passes through some spectacular countryside before reaching Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and the combination of peaceful water, woodland, hills and historic engineering makes it a brilliant area to explore.

It's also a reminder that you don't always need to rush around to have an adventure.

Sometimes the best way to experience North Wales is to grab a paddle and take your time.

4. Visit the River Dee

The River Dee runs right through Llangollen and is a huge part of what makes the town feel so special.

It's particularly impressive when you see the river from above, but getting close to the water gives you another appreciation of the valley.

For experienced paddlers, the Dee offers much more challenging water than the calm canal.

For everyone else, simply walking alongside the river and exploring the town is a great way to spend some time.

If you're new to canoeing, I'd recommend starting with a suitable guided experience rather than simply heading onto moving water yourself.

5. Walk up to Castell Dinas Brân

If you fancy earning one of the best views around Llangollen, head up towards Castell Dinas Brân.

The ruined medieval castle sits high above the town, with views across the Dee Valley and towards the surrounding hills.

It's a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll, so take sensible footwear and allow yourself enough time to enjoy it.

The reward is the view.

On a clear day, it's easy to see why this has become one of the iconic sights around Llangollen.

It's also a great contrast to spending the morning on the water.

6. Explore Llangollen itself

Don't make the mistake of treating Llangollen as somewhere you simply drive through on the way to the aqueduct.

Spend some time in the town.

Grab a coffee, find something to eat, wander along the river and explore the streets around the centre.

Llangollen has a great mix of outdoor adventure, history and traditional Welsh town character.

It's also a useful base if you're planning to spend more than a day in the area.

7. Discover the wider Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct isn't the only interesting thing here.

The World Heritage Site stretches for around 11 miles and includes canals, tunnels, viaducts, aqueducts and countryside across the Dee Valley.

That means you can easily turn a visit to the aqueduct into a full day exploring the surrounding area.

Walk part of the canal.

Visit Trevor Basin.

Explore the countryside.

Stop for something to eat.

Or, if you want to make the day memorable, see the aqueduct from a canoe.

8. Try another outdoor adventure

Canoeing isn't the only adventure available around Llangollen.

The area is well known for outdoor activities, with opportunities for walking, paddlesports and other adventures around the Dee Valley.

That's one of the reasons I love operating here.

You can have a peaceful morning on the canal and then spend the afternoon exploring the hills or discovering another part of the valley.

North Wales is brilliant for that kind of trip.

You don't have to choose between scenery and adventure.

9. Explore the area around Chirk

If you've got a little longer to explore, head towards Chirk.

The area around Chirk has its own collection of fascinating canal features, countryside and historic engineering.

It's also home to Chirk Aqueduct and Chirk Tunnel.

There's something about seeing the Dee Valley from a canoe that you simply don't get from the road or the footpath.

You notice the wildlife.
